Emily:

What's going on, everyone. Hello and welcome to the darn good leadership podcast. This show is all about being a strong and effective leader. One that can make positive impacts on your teams and communities. You're going to get ideas, inspiration, and practical advice. You can take action on to be a darn good leader. On your host, Emily Holting. Hello? Hello. I hope you're doing so very well today. And in today's show, we're going to be doing a leadership, self audit and reflection on what you are consuming. So just as the saying goes, you are what you eat. You are also what information you are consuming. And who you spend time with these things shape us. They mold us into what we are and who we will become, and they either enable or inhibit you from reaching your goals and true potential. So today is a quick gut check. Think of this as maintenance like you would be doing from time to time, like an oil change or a teeth cleaning, but unlike an oil change or teeth cleaning, this audit will be painless and better yet. Free. In addition, I'm going to do this audit for you in less than 10 minutes. I think that's faster than any oil change or teeth cleaning on the market. This audit is composed of just three quick and easy parts. The gut-check. The gold check. And the reflection. So without further ado, let's get a tune up in and let's get our leadership consumption, self audit on. Here we go. Part one. The gut check. Question one. What are you reading? And if the first thing that comes to mind is, Ooh, I'm not. Well, why not? Can you make time for it? And if you are reading well as a for pleasure or for personal development or growth. Question two. What are you listening to? So right now this would be something you're listening to a podcast, or are there any other podcasts you're listening to? Are you listening to music at all? Think about that, what's filling your ears. Question three. What are you watching? So are you watching any TV? Are you bingeing on a Netflix? Any movies? Is there anything on a screen that is consuming your time? Question four. Who are you following on social media? Who you have chosen to follow on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube. Tic-tac I'm sure I'm missing something in that lineup. Whoever you're following is somehow filling your mind. So are you following someone or are you just mindlessly scrolling like a zombie. But what are you doing on social media and how much time is that consuming of you? And finally question five. Who are you spending time with? So this could be in-person or virtually if you are someone like me, who does a lot of virtual work. Who are the people who are most consuming your time? All right now with these five questions. What are you reading? What are you listening to? What are you watching? Who are you following on social media and who are you spending time with? I want you to think about, are these things filling you up? Or are they draining you? Do these things make you feel better? Or worse after, do you have more anxiety, more anger, more frustration. Or when you do some of these things, do they calm you? Do they relax you, do they get your creative juices flowing to the making more productive? Do they make you want to be a better person? So just take a mental check of these things. All right. This is just the gut check part. The reading, the listening, the watching social media and the people. Okay. So after you make that list, if you want to make a list or just a mental note, Do you, as you will. I'm going to move us right along to part number two. The gold check. Now I want you to think about what are your two to three biggest schools that you currently have? And I don't want these to be things that are five-year plans, but I'm talking about something more immediate. So something that is three months to six months to maybe even a year out, but no further than that. So what are your two to three biggest goals? And if you don't have any, okay, well, there's something to take note of. Because you should. Without a goal then any road will do, right. And we want to have a clear path. You want to be in the driver's seat. You want to be driving towards. Something intentionally. So if you don't have a goal, this would be a great opportunity to think about that. What are the things that you want to achieve? What does success look like for you? Who do you want to become? What do you want to build? What do you want to grow into? But if you do know them, then list them. And we just want to focus on the two to three biggest ones that you have. And then I want you to think about your goals and are they all work? Are they all personal? Are they a mix of these things? Personally. I like to have a goal. That's about my family life. One goal for my professional life and one goal for just me, my personal growth and development. So I will share in this current moment in time, my three goals are as follows. The first one is a family one. I'm planning a wedding The second one is a professional goal. And I think I've mentioned before that I've started in a new role in a new position. And so with that comes new tools, new processes, new acronyms, new people. So my goal here is sharpening the, saw all my new role. And number three is my personal development goal, which is this podcast. So making sure week after week that I am getting out new and fresh material to this community. So that is our goal check. What are your two to three biggest goals? Part three is the reflection. I want you to think about your goals that you just listed out in part two. And then I want you to think about part, one of what you are consuming. What are you reading? Listening to watching. Social media, who you're spending time with. And then ask yourself. Are those things that you are consuming? Helping. Or hurting your goals. Are they aligned to, or are they in opposition of what you're trying to achieve? Now, if you look at all those things you're consuming, there might be some that are not really helping some that are hurting, some that are really helping. So you'll probably have to go through that. Think about that a little bit. But if you keep everything the same, if you didn't do anything different from this moment in time, Where will you be a month from now? What about six months? What about a year from now? Is your consumption. Leading you on a path to results. So everyone, no matter how good or how disciplined they are at this needs a tune-up. What do you need to stop? What do you need to start? And what do you need to continue to do with. With your consumption. To reach your goals. What is the biggest waste of your time. What's something that you're spending a lot of time in, with little impact on helping you hit your results. What is draining you or bring you low energy or anxiety and stress. How can you either reduce this, improve this, or eliminate it altogether. What are the things that are most propelling you towards your results? And bringing you joy or energy and creativity and lifting you up. And can you increase that? And finally the most important part of this audit. I want you to identify one to two, no more than that. One to two actions you will take to improve your consumption to better align to your goals. So out of those things that you could potentially do, pick one to two things and actually take action on those things. So that's it. Part one, we had the gut check of what you are consuming and the time spent on those areas. Part two was the goal check. And where are you identified your two to three biggest areas that you want to succeed in and do well. And part three is a reflection on if and how your consumption. Is hurting or helping you reach those goals. And finally identifying one to two actions to improve your consumption, to better align to your goals. The takeaway here is just be mindful and intentional of what you allow into your mind on a daily basis and who you spend your time with. Because you raise the odds that you will start to think about those things more. And you will start to act like those people more with time. And what you think about and how you act will affect your decisions, the outcomes of your goals, and it will shape your life. I certainly hope this episode has made you stop and reflect on your own consumption habits and has inspired you to potentially make some tweaks to help you reach all of your goals and be amazingly set up for success. People'd be bright. Be a leader who embraces oil changes, teeth cleaning and leadership consumption audits. And till next time, Cheers
